When the Ford Motor Company introduced its sporty Mustang in mid-1964, it spawned the “pony car” market. But it came to a point that the sales were flagging, and industry rumors began to circulate that the Firebird days were numbered.

In September 2001, the announcement finally came and in 2002, Firebirds finally came to an end.
