Mazda 626 is a family car produced by Mazda for the export market.
Based on the Japan-market Mazda Capella, the 626 replaced the 616/618
and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002. In US trim, the first Mazda
626 was a moderately-upscale compact with rear drive, a 2-liter SOHC
four-cylinder delivering 75 horsepower and actual space for four. It
performed well and as a matter of fact, Consumer Guide and Car ad
Driver magazines called it a “bargain-based BMW.”
Another amazing feature was a split-folding rear seat that increases
cargo capacity and flexibility tremendously. These aspects have made
the Mazda 626 popular, a hit. The second generation of the Mazda 626
that appeared in 1983 was in a front-wheel drive platform. The new 2.0
-liter engine was bumped up to 83 horsepower. Two trim levels were also
offered during this year, the DX and the LX.
Many changes were made in the following years, that includes a switch
to fuel injection, both available in the two trims and the availability
of a turbocharged version of the engine which rated at 120 hp, in a
five-door GT version. Time flies but still consumer response was
strong, the Mazda 626 was one of the Ten Best cars in the Car and
Driver magazine.
