Volvo has explored building "hybrid" electric cars. The turbine hybrid
gives you the best of both worlds; the option of running pure
electric for urban driving, or turning on the gas-powered turbine
engine in hybrid mode for cruising. The hybrid mode helps to
overcome the limited range and performance of a pure electric car.
Volvo has a test car that can top 100 mph in hybrid mode, runs up to
415 miles without refueling, and gets 45 mpg at a constant 55 mph.
