The gas, or accelerator, pedal is connected to the throttle valve by
the throttle cable, or linkage. Pressing on the pedal causes the
linkage to open the throttle valve, and thereby increase engine
speed. A return spring on the throttle valve returns the pedal to its
normal position when foot pressure pedal is released.
