A cylinder is a round hole through the block, bored to receive a
piston. All automobile engines, whether water-cooled or air-cooled,
four cycle or two cycle, have more than one cylinder. These multiple
cylinders are arranged in-line, opposed, or in a V. Engines for other
purposes, such as aviation, are arranged in other assorted forms.
The first four cylinder engine with a sliding transmission was in the
1907 Buick.
