Tread width is a key measurement with respect to weight balance and
rear wheel track. Tread width is the distance between the center
points of the left tire tread and right tire tread as they come in
contact with the road. While the front and rear wheels may have
different tread widths, each front wheel must be the same distance
from the centerline of the frame and each rear wheel must be the same
distance from the centerline. This parallel relationship establishes
a balance between the front and rear, and between the right and left.
While this balance may not mean true equal weight at these points, it
does mean that a balanced distribution of weight and stress has been
acquired for the proper setting of front wheel angles.
