The backing plate is a round, stamped steel disc, used to keep water
out of the drum/rotor, and in drum brakes as a mount for the wheel
cylinder. It is bolted to the end of the rear axle housing for drum
brakes and to the spindle in disc brakes. The backing plate is the
foundation for the wheel cylinder and brake shoe assembly. Some
backing plates have air scoops built in to allow better cooling of
the brakes.
